![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() IRON WIDOW was one of Autumn 2021’s most hyped YA releases, and I finally got my hands on a copy to see what the fuss was all about. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way-and stop more girls from being sacrificed.īlurb taken from Goodreads. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia. ![]() She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected-she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it’s to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister’s death. The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. ![]() ![]() In Sandcastle, a character tells a story about a king who is confronted by death and begs for his life. While it's a little frustrating that there's never any payoff for this plan, it does fit with the larger themes of Old, and especially the graphic novel it's based on. However, no one tests this theory - not even Jarin, who takes the far greater risk of trying to swim to freedom and ends up drowning soon afterwards. Passing through the canyon in this way would cost a person around 20 years of their lifespan, which is a heavy price to pay, but certainly a better option than simply waiting to die on the beach. ![]() ![]() After floating his decompression sickness theory, Jarin suggests a way that they could escape through the canyon: by moving a single step at a time, allowing their bodies to adjust before taking each step. ![]() ![]() Disney in this case just gets to be the biggest target, but they're hardly the only one creating problems. What Orenstein really means is she doesn't like the idea of Princess, that it's more limiting to girls than empowering. It's a snapshot of the current parental woes: early childhood consumerism, limited toy options for girls, the sexualization of children, glitz pageants, female development vs male development, worrisome psychological studies, original and gruesome fairy tales, controversial Disney Channel stars, comic super heroines, and voyeuristic Internet culture. ![]() This books is not so much an exploration of Why Disney Princesses Are Bad, but why Archaic Societal Standards and Conglomerates Selling To Your Children Are Bad. ![]() This limits their creative play, instills in them a trust for corporations that do not have their best interests at heart, sexualizes them too early, and inspires them to aspire to misogynistic, retrograde role models that limit their own growth and potential. Little girls are mass-marketed Disney Princesses from an early age. So Peggy Orenstein's Cinderella Ate My Daughter boils down to this: ![]() I bring this up because this book focuses on parenting and developmental psychology and I am not an expert on either, nor do I claim to be. ![]() I feel like I should preface this whole review with the disclaimer that I am a childless adult who has deep nostalgic ties to Disney films and is a fan of the Disney Princess franchise. ![]() ![]() Computer monitors are not all calibrated equally and color reproduction on the Internet is not precise. *Color Disclaimer - Due to the many variations in monitors and browsers, the color of products may appear different on different monitors. ![]() Looking for a specific design that you don't see? Along the way, stellar comic riffs on the horrors of a shared packet of crisps illustrate how popularity in the playground (and in general) is nothing but a trap and fantasies about rocking up to the Lancôme counter with a scrap of period-stained loo roll and asking the sales assistant to colour-match a lipstick nod to gross-out feminism. Rambling, sparsely punctuated sentences often repeat themselves and its conversational style – “that’s right”, the narrator likes to reassure herself – contrasts with a satisfyingly recondite vocabulary, running to words such as ouroboros and autotelic. ![]() |
